(December 19, 2024) – What skills did you unlock this year thanks to TikTok? Admit it or not, some became baristas, others became chefs, and almost everyone became dancers.
Introduced in the Philippines in 2017, TikTok swiftly became the most popular short video-sharing app in the country. It has gained millions of users by enabling them to showcase their wit and creativity through engaging content.
From the simplest challenges to the most mind-boggling ones, it’s safe to say Filipinos are practically born TikTok-coded.
Here are five TikTok trends that Filipinos jumped on this 2024.
5. Suspect challenge
“Suspek, suspek, maganda o pogi naman pero palaging niloloko.”
Have you tried this challenge with your friends or partner? So, okay pa ba ang samahan?
The “Suspect” challenge encouraged people to roast someone in the style of a police broadcast—complete with them running away like a guilty suspect. It’s chaotic, ridiculous, and guaranteed to test your friendships or relationships.
Even some Filipino celebrities tried the challenge because, of course, who can resist a good laugh?
4. Marikit sa Dilim
“Tinitigan ko, nilapitan ko.”
Bet you’re singing it now, huh? The song “Marikit sa Dilim” by rappers Juan Caoile and Kyleswish took TikTok by storm for quite a while. What started as a simple dance challenge spiraled into countless creative versions from the ever-imaginative Filipinos.
To be clear, the diwata mentioned in the song (“hanggang sa may diwata na pagdilat ko”) isn’t a pares vendor.
The trend even found its way outside the Philippines, with several K-pop idols doing the challenge. Now that’s the kind of power Filipinos bring to the table.
3. Pantropiko
Who will ever forget how this dance craze BLOOMed this 2024? Uy, naisingit pa ang fandom.
The hit song “Pantropiko” by P-pop group sensation BINI owned the spotlight all year. Thanks to the choreography crafted by BINI member Sheena, the song helped their fame skyrocket to new heights.
Influencers, content creators, and celebrities across the Philippines jumped on the “Pantropiko” dance craze. It also spread to other parts of the world. K-pop girl group UNIS, which has two Filipino members, even made a cover of the song.
2NE1 icons Minzy and Dara also joined in on the fun ’cause boy, it feels so good.
2. Make-up transition
Struggling to nail your makeup look? Well, keep working because TikTok influencers will only leave you wondering if it’s art or sorcery!
Make-up transition challenges have been a TikTok staple for years, but they thrived more than ever this year.
One of this year’s most memorable versions is the “Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas.” Dubbed the “Asoka Challenge of the Philippines,” it unleashed a wave of creativity among influencers, social media personalities, content creators, and celebrities, including Vice Ganda, Marian Rivera, and Ivana Alawi, among others. Si Andrea Brillantes, may late entry pa!
Because let’s face it, when it comes to TikTok, Filipinos always take things to the next level. To no one’s surprise, everybody slayed!
1. Maybe This Time
The song that launched a thousand ridiculous dances on TikTok. You can never stop yourself from dancing and being silly when you hear the popular song.
Sarah Geronimo’s rendition of the classic ballad “Maybe This Time” made a surprising comeback to the charts, all thanks to a TikTok dance challenge started by an unsuspecting Grade 10 student from Zamboanga City. His reason for doing it was quite profound: He was bored.
With his hilariously goofy moves and iconic poker face, his video racked up millions of views and kicked off a trend no one saw coming!
Which of these TikTok challenges have you tried? Come on, we know you did at least one. Umamin ka!
