MARCH 18, 2020 — A city mayor has allowed limited operations for tricycle, opposing a total ban on all forms of public transportation as the government began a total lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus.
Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto said a complete ban on all public transport vehicles may not be conducive to a healthier community.
However, the first-term mayor said the tricycle operations will not be enough to ferry people who wish to get from one point to another.
“[Ano] na po ang mangyayari kung hindi makasakay ang mga health workers at libu-libong mga pasyente na nangangailangan ng treatment? Paano na rin po kung magkaroon ng emergency?” the mayor raised in a statement.
“Let us also remember that not everyone has access to private cars. Not to mention that sharing private, enclosed vehicles may actually be more conducive to the spread of the virus.”
The young mayor and son of two popular show business personalities, hoped that the national government would not overrule his decision, saying that a risk assessment by city officials showed banning public transport altogether may do more harm than good to the public health situation.
“Sana po makita ng mga ginagalang nating lider na may perspektibo kami sa mga local government unit na maaaring hindi nakikita mula sa mataas,” Sotto appealed.
President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the entire main island of Luzon under enhanced community quarantine, suspending of all public transportation to encourage residents to stay home.
TRANSPORT WOES AMID LOCKDOWN
The immediate suspension of public transportation in Metro Manila has left thousands of essential workers stranded. Transport drivers and operators also lost their daily livelihood.
Authorities have begun apprehending buses and taxis plying along EDSA with little to no exemptions to the transport ban. Jeepneys, UV express vehicles, and tricycles around the Metro were not spared by authorities.
Social media posts showed several workers, daily wage earners, and even patients were left with no other choice but to either stay put or travel on foot.
Netizens have criticized the government for the sudden implementation of the transport ban, saying the measure was not feasible for many of the millions of people in Metro Manila. (Nicole Dacanay / MM)
