(October 28, 2024) – The Malacañang and the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday refuted the claim of former president Rodrigo Duterte that the crime rate in the Philippines rose since Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. assumed the presidency.
Executive secretary Lucas Bersamin refuted Duterte’s remark during the Senate’s inquiry into his brutal war on drugs as the “complete opposite.”
“We have achieved stability and maintained peace and order in our country without foregoing due process nor setting aside the basic human rights of any Filipino,” said Bersamin in a statement.
DOJ secretary Boying Remulla, meanwhile, stressed that the country’s peace and order situation has “dramatically improved,” citing a report by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“With utmost respect for former President Duterte’s leadership, we believe that his perception of an escalating crime rate does not reflect the reality supported by concrete data,” said Remulla in a statement.
According to the PNP, recorded crimes from July 1, 2022 to January 31, 2024 dropped by 10.6% compared to December 1, 2020 and June 30, 2022.
During the hearing, Duterte claimed that crimes were “on the rise again” under Marcos’ watch. He did not provide any proof.
To recall, Duterte vowed to eradicate drugs within six months of his presidency. His promise, however, did not happen and led to widespread violence and human rights abuses, which got criticized by the international community.
According to human rights groups, 30,000 individuals were killed during Duterte’s cruel war on drugs. Only a handful of police officers have been held accountable.
During the parallel hearing of the quad committee of the House of Representatives, former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office chief Royina Garma and former National Police Commission head Edilberto Leonardo revealed that Duterte had a reward system for police officers for killing drug suspects.
Garma and Edilberto were both appointed by Duterte.
Duterte, Sen. Bato Dela Rosa, and several police officers are being investigated by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.
