(June 11, 2024) – Transportation group MANIBELA has extended its transport strike until Friday, June 14, as a protest against the PUV Modernization Program. Despite this move, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) claimed that the public has not felt significant disruptions from the ongoing strike.
MMDA said the latest three-day transport strike which started on Monday did not leave passengers stranded, but it only worsened traffic flow along East Ave. in Quezon City.
The transport group initially gathered around the office of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Quezon City, but LTFRB Chairman Teofilo Guadiz III did not meet with the protesters. Because of this, the group vowed to continue their protest until government officials will engage with them regarding their call.
MANIBELA President Mar Valbuena emphasized their appeal to continue the operations for non-consolidated jeepney drivers.
“May suggestion, may usapan na extend kami ng isang taon. At habang pinag-uusapan ito, pababiyahehin kami habang ginagawa rin namin ‘yung prototype ng aming jeepney,” Valbuena said.
The LTFRB is set to discuss today a proposal by a congressman to extend the deadline for non-consolidated drivers for one more year. However, Chairman Guadiz asserted the need to start enforcement actions against non-compliant operators.
“It is up for deliberation tomorrow but until such time that the final resolution of the board is issued, ‘yun pa rin po ang amin susundin. ‘Pag hindi ka nakapag-consolidate until April 30, tanggal ang iyong prangkisa at ikaw ay colorum na,” he said.
Guadiz added that there is no need for a memorandum or formal order to begin enforcement, which can start any day once guidelines are finalized with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and MMDA.
Transport group PISTON did not join the protest on Monday, preferring instead to continue its operations. The group, however, is set to appeal to the Supreme Court for a temporary restraining order against the PUV Modernization Program on Tuesday.
