(October 24, 2024) – Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. on Thursday received backlash from netizens, describing him as empty-headed in disaster management amid the impact of Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Kristine in the Philippines.
During a situation briefing last Wednesday, Marcos said he felt a “little helpless” when STS Kristine struck the Bicol Region. He said the government can only do so much, adding that they just have to wait for the typhoon to end.
“All we can do is sit tight, wait, hope, pray that there’s not too much damage, that there are no casualties,” said Marcos. “Then go in as soon and as quickly as possible with as much as we can to alleviate the effects, especially first to the population.”

Marcos also admitted that the government was not prepared to provide food for stranded passengers.
“Iyan ang talagang nag-fall through the cracks na hindi natin napaghandaan. But I’m glad it came out in the news,” added the chief executive.
Philippine Ports Authority chief Jay Santiago reported that over 5,000 persons were stranded and were fed using the pocket money of their personnel.
Department of Social Welfare and Development secretary Rex Gatchalian noted that ready-to-eat food boxes for people stuck in seaports during a typhoon will only be launched by November.
Netizens, however, claimed that Marcos is “clueless” in disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
In a statement on Thursday, Marcos maintained his administration has been working “tirelessly” to provide urgent help to areas battered by STS Kristine.
“Lahat ng mapagkukunan ng inyong pambansang pamahalaan ay inilaaan upang ipaabot bilang kinakailangan na tulong tungo sa mabilisang pagbalik sa normal na kondisyon at pamumuhay sa mga apektadong lugar,” said Marcos.
In May 2023, he ordered the creation of the Disaster Response and Crisis Management Task Force.
