(October 24, 2024) – The death toll from Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Kristine has climbed to at least 20, mostly from the Bicol Region, according to the Philippine National Police Regional Office 5.
It, however, noted that the figure has yet to be validated.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), meanwhile, said four were injured and seven are missing—five in the Bicol Region and one each in CALABARZON and the Ilocos Region—due to STS Kristine.
The NDRRMC added that over 431,000 families or more than two million individuals from more than 2000 barangays nationwide have been affected.
The Bicol Region reported the highest number of affected individuals at nearly 1,700,000, followed by the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with over 350,000.
Last Wednesday, the Department of Agriculture recorded almost P10 million worth of agricultural losses in the Bicol Region.
In nine regions, 86 seaports and two airports suspended their operations due to the impact of the weather disturbance, leading to nearly 6,000 passengers stranded.
Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, San Fernando in Masbate, Tagkawayan in Quezon, Cavite, and 13 areas in the Eastern Visayas already declared a state of calamity.
During a situation briefing last Wednesday, Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. instructed government agencies to prepare for the worst of STS Kristine.
“There’s nothing we can do except wait for it to pass,” said Marcos. “Give all the warnings that we can give. Evacuate as many people as we can.”
As of 5 p.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA) said STS Kristine was moving westward slowly in the coastal waters of Santa Lucia, Ilocos Sur. It has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gustiness of up to 115 km/h.
As of writing, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan are under Signal No. 3, while most areas in Luzon and Visayas are under Signal No. 2 and Signal No. 1.
“Kristine is forecast to re-intensify as it moves over the West Philippine Sea. While it is likely that the tropical cyclone will remain a severe tropical storm in the next five days, the chance for it to be upgraded into a typhoon is not ruled out,” said PAGASA.
