(April 1, 2024) – The mother of a 17-year-old taekwondo athlete, who suffered injuries after sparring with a male black belter in a school in Bulacan, claimed that her daughter was deliberately harmed due to “jealousy” of their coach.
The incident left the young yellow belter traumatized and sparked an investigation into the incident. It was the coach, identified as Jerry Salvador Jr., who ordered her to spar with the male opponent, who was taller and heftier.
“Mukhang nagselos ang taekwondo coach sa boyfriend ng anak ko kaya siya pinabugbog (sa black belter),” said the mother in an interview with One PH’s One Balita Pilipinas on Monday. “Alam kong may foul play sa nangyari kahit sinasabi nilang nadulas lang ang anak ko.”
The mother, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed that the “animosity” of Salvador arose after witnessing the teen receiving a bouquet from her boyfriend on her birthday last February 26—a day before the sparring.
She alleged that Salvador was upset by the gesture, which she said led to her daughter being targeted. She was also not convinced by the reports suggesting that her daughter simply slipped. Her daughter was brought to the hospital after sustaining bruises and a swollen face.
“Hindi siya (daughter) nakapagkuwento. Mother instinct (ang gamit ko). Alam kong may foul play sa nangyari. Hindi nadulas ang anak ko,” stressed the mother.
She also expressed her disappointment with JIL Colleges Foundation, the school where the incident happened, slamming the lack of communication and action from officials.
Amid her efforts to seek justice, including reporting the incident to the police and seeking assistance from the women’s desk, the case remains under investigation, with charges of sexual harassment, threat, and physical injury already filed.
She also claimed that her daughter’s classmates are defending Salvador, refusing to acknowledge the possibility of his involvement in the incident.
“’Yun ang kinalulungkot ko, na hindi nila (sinusuportahan ang anak ko) kahit nakita nila ang katotohanan. Hindi daw ‘yun ginawa ni coach,” said the mother.
