(December 31, 2021) – Some may have thought TikTok already had its best year in 2020. Well, think again.
Throughout 2021, the video-sharing platform has continued to exceed expectations with the trends, dance crazes, song covers, and other out-of-this-world stuff that it helped popularize. It’s almost as if a new TikTok trend would arise week after week but the hype seems to have no end.
TikTok, which now hosts more than one billion active users, served as the go-to app for millions of Filipinos who wanted to unwind, laugh, or escape—albeit temporarily—from all the stress amid another tough year. Not a day goes by for many without scrolling through the depths of TikTok to find that one precious video they would recreate next.
Here are five TikTok trends that stole the show in 2021.
5. School nostalgia
TikTok would not be complete without the hilarious videos. Almost two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, many students could not help but miss the memories in school with their friends, classmates, and teachers. Some creators dwelled on this nostalgia to produce relatable content.
Many skits portrayed the typical scenes most of us probably experienced at one point during high school or college. From classroom presentations, recitations, open forums, retreats, flag ceremonies, jamming sessions, parties, young love, the typical lines we heard from our teachers, up to that moment when the guard won’t let us out of the campus, it’s all here at TikTok University. Good times.

4. #LearnOnTikTok
Let’s face it: TikTok, for all its entertainment value, has its share of flaws. Like many other online platforms, it has been infiltrated with videos spreading disinformation. But as the saying goes, what better way to fight lies than with the truth?
Health professionals ventured into TikTok to debunk misconceptions about COVID-19 vaccines, helping curb hesitancy one video at a time. Lawyers provided free legal tips while some titas and titos debunked myths about the Martial Law of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
It may be quite difficult to reach, much less convince, every person due to the platform’s algorithm, but all efforts are integral in defending the truth in a heavily polarized nation like the Philippines.

3. Outfit check
H&M-Bershka-Uniqlo-Shein-Nike! Nope, it’s not a rap song. It’s that barkada video on TikTok, where members of the group line up and simply identify (read: brag) where they bought each piece of clothing they have on, starting from the top down to the shoes. Some even included their bag to complete the outfit of the day.
Known as the Bama Rush TikTok or #BamaRushTok, the trend originated from the United States before crossing to the Philippines in November. But it wasn’t all fun and praise as it also drew criticisms, sparking conversations about privilege as well as the pitfalls of fast fashion.

2. Pajama Party
If there’s one Tatak Pinoy trend that took TikTok by storm in 2021, the “Pajama Party” dance craze would definitely take the throne. Not familiar with the song title? Perhaps its catchy line “pamparampampam” would help you remember. Rings a bell, right?
It was the song used by TikTok user Vanjoe Lazaro for a dance video in January, giving birth to a trend that would remain popular for most of 2021. Netizens, influencers, and celebrities took on the challenge which may have also given you a last-song syndrome.
But its popularity didn’t end there. Its infectious beat also enticed TikTok enthusiasts in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and South Korea. Yep, it surely made “pamparampampam.”

1. Andre Brillantes Nation
Andrea Brillantes, one of the top celebrity winners of the 1st TikTok Awards, has maintained her far-reaching popularity on the social media platform. Carrying the username @blythe, the 18-year-old actress has impressed many with her dance moves.
In one of her most popular videos, Brillantes danced to the music of “You and Me,” wearing a vibrant yellow-and-blue outfit. It’s the content that launched a thousand face swaps—or even more—that made it appear as if they’re the ones dancing.
Even celebrities hopped on the craze. Others, meanwhile, had fans who already did it for them before they could even say anything, as in the case of Paulo Avelino.
But some found the trend creepy and dangerous due to the security risks posed by deep fakes—a reminder that all may seem fun and well but not when used for illegal activities. (PM)
