MAY 24, 2019 — Philippine Science High School-Main Campus students and alumni staged a protest over the decision of the school’s Board of Trustees to allow certain students to graduate.
The protest comes after 6 Grade 12 students who allegedly shared lewd photos of their female schoolmates online were allowed to graduate despite the serious infractions.
The school’s Management Committee first recommended the non-graduation of the involved students after it found sufficient grounds for at least two Level III offenses based on their Code of Conduct.
In the resolution released by the PSHS System Board of Trustees last May 17, it agreed with the ManCom’s recommendation that the students have violated a Level III offense.
However, while the Mancom counted each single act as one infraction, the board decided that all acts are considered as only one violation.
Since it is the Board of Trustees who makes the final call, the concerned students were allowed to graduate.
In a statement, the 2019 Batch Council slammed the decision of the board: “A lenient decision is not an act of compassion. Instead, it is an insult to the to the sanctity of the graduation rites themselves. It is a showcase of tolerance of abhorrent acts. It is a display of indifference to the experiences and voices of the victims who have entrusted this institution to uphold the very values it has come to define itself by.”
The school’s Parent-Teacher Council also joined the call to prevent the involved students from graduating.
“The PSHS-BOT is sending the wrong message that it is acceptable to ignore the rights of these female students who were treated with disrespect and utter disregard for their dignity,” it said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Senator Bam Aquino, who is a member of PSHS Board of Trustees said that the decision of the body can still change. He added that if it were up to him, the students would not be allowed to march.
On the other hand, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, who is also part of the board, says she still needs to review the infractions before making any comments.
