(July 11, 2024) – The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) will commence its national census on Monday, July 15. This initiative aims to gather population data and update the socio-economic information of residents through the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS).
The census will run until September 15, Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
PSA will deploy around 70,000 enumerators nationwide to collect data. They wear uniforms bearing the PSA logo and ID signed by National Statistician Usec. Claire Dennis Mapa.
Usec. Mapa asks for the public’s cooperation, stating, “While ito ay 45 minutes, konting abala. But we hope that the household head o ‘yung respondent ay mag-participate.”
Households can expect enumerators to ask questions about education, employment, and other socio-economic factors. The process will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the number of residents per household.
The PSA assures the public that enumerators will not ask for confidential information, such as bank account details, nor solicit any products or services.
Due to internal migration, with many city residents returning to urban areas, the population data requires updating. The agency last conducted a census in 2020.
“Nagkaroon tayo ng internal migration. Marami ang mga taga-siyudad na umuwi at nabawasan ‘yung population ng mga cities. Ngayon, dahil bumalik na naman ulit sila, kailangan na namin natin i-update ‘yung ating population,” said Usec. Mapa.
Moreover, updating the list of beneficiaries will ensure effective implementation of government programs, such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
“Updating the list of beneficiaries will ensure that our social protection programs reach the intended beneficiaries. Minimizing wastage and leakages,” DSWD Usec. Atty. Adonis Sulit noted.
However, some residents remain apprehensive about the census, expressing privacy concerns.
“Parang hindi ka na naka-private, parang lahat na lang, aalamin nila. Para saan? Tapos may survey-survey pa. Eh ang daming manloloko ngayon,” a resident aired his concern.
To ensure the integrity and privacy of the data collected, PSA assures strict adherence to data privacy regulations.
Under the Republic Act No. 10625 or the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, failure to participate or provide accurate information can result in penalties of one year imprisonment and a fine of P100,000.
Results are expected to be released by December and will be submitted to Pres. Bongbong Marcos and various government agencies.
