(June 15, 2025) – A lawyer on Saturday dared senator-judges to practice “delicadeza” by inhibiting themselves in the impending trial of Vice President Sara Duterte due to alleged partiality.
Constitutional law professor Atty. Jennifer Arlene Reyes made the remarks in a media forum, stressing “delicadeza,” a Spanish terminology that describes the practice of ethical restraint, respect, and integrity in one’s life, is a “free” trait for the senators to embody as talks about Duterte’s impeachment raises concern.
“I appeal to them [Senators] if they still have delicadeza and they still respect the Filipino people, stop being partial or at least have the decency to inhibit themselves from this proceeding,” said Reyes, as quoted by the Philippine News Agency.
Her statement came after senator-judges Imee Marcos and Robin Padilla joined Duterte during her commemoration of the Philippines’ Independence Day in Malaysia on Thursday.
Reyes argued that Filipinos expect the members of the impeachment court to be free of their political biases and alliances, citing the mandates of the 1987 Constitution.
“To put it bluntly, dapat mahiya sila sa taong bayan. Dapat ang pa-iralin nila ay ang loyalty nila sa constitution dahil ang constitution ay ang sambayanang Pilipino,” she added.
According to an OCTA Research Group survey released last week, 78% or nearly eight out of 10 Filipinos believe Duterte must face her impeachment trial.

“They are the representatives of the people. They must always prove to the Filipino people that they deserve the votes of the populace,” said Reyes.
On Tuesday, 18 senators approved Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s motion to remand the articles of impeachment back to the House of Representatives to seek clarifications.
The lower chamber swiftly responded and certified its constitutionality.

Last February, Vice Pres. Duterte was impeached by 215 lawmakers in the House of Representatives due to multiple constitutional violations, including her alleged misuse of confidential funds and grave threats against Pres. Bongbong Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
