(August 17, 2024) – Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio on Saturday dismissed the allegations made by a former intelligence officer of the Bureau of Customs linking her family to a shabu shipment as a “political attack.”
During a hearing of a quad-committee in the House of Representatives on Friday, Jimmy Guban revealed that Duterte-Carpio’s husband, Mans Carpio, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, and former presidential economic adviser Michael Yang were involved in smuggling P11 billion worth of shabu in 2018.
“Nakikita niyo naman, lumabas siya (issue) nung umalis ako sa DepEd (Department of Education),” said Duterte-Carpio in an ambush interview. “Lumabas siya nung nagsasalita na ako kung ano ang dapat na ginagawa natin para sa ating bayan.”
Rep. Duterte, her brother, on Thursday dismissed Guban’s credibility as a witness, citing his retraction of testimonies in 2018 regarding the controversy.
“Hindi ko kilala si Jimmy Guban at sigurado ako na hindi rin niya ako kilala. Wala kaming anumang transaction o ugnayan kaya walang rason na siya ay pagbantaan kung babanggitin man niya ang pangalan ko,” said Rep. Duterte.
Guban also identified several individuals connected to the Dutertes as the alleged owners of the shabu shipment. He claimed that Davao City Coun. Small Abellera Jr. introduced him to the smuggling operation in 2017 and to the Dutertes and Yang.
Yang, who served under Duterte-Carpio’s father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, was earlier linked to a P3.6 billion shabu raid in Pampanga last year.
The elder Duterte was often criticized for his political harassment of critics during his heavy-handed rule. He allegedly ordered the imprisonment of former senator Leila De Lima and heavily lambasted former vice president Leni Robredo and other opposition figures.
Duterte also admitted that he pushed for the shutdown of media giant ABS-CBN.
Duterte-Carpio claimed that Guban’s allegations could be part of an impeachment plan against her.
“Expected na natin ‘yan dahil mainit nga ang pulitika dito sa ating bayan,” added Duterte-Carpio.
Duterte-Carpio insisted that the House of Representatives should just focus on national issues like poverty and inflation instead of Guban’s claims.
