SOJ Remulla names Atty. Joel Anthony Viado as BI Officer-in-Charge

(September 10, 2024) – Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla designated OIC Deputy Commissioner Atty. Joel Anthony Viado as the Officer-in-Charge of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Tuesday, September 10, following the dismissal of BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco.

“It is essential that we assure our people that the services of our immigration bureau will remain uninterrupted and consistent regardless of any transition in leadership. Hence, I entrust the stewardship of the bureau to Deputy Commissioner Viado, who I believe is best fit for the position,” he said.

According to Sec. Remulla, Viado will manage the day-to-day operations of the agency under his supervision until Pres. Bongbong Marcos appoints a new commissioner.

On Monday, September 9, the Justice chief revealed that he personally recommended to the President that Commissioner Norman Tansingco be relieved of his position at the Bureau of Immigration. He also mentioned that Pres. Marcos agreed to relieve Tansingco from his post.

“Nagkasundo na kami ng pangulo, papalitan siya, papalitan siya. If I were him, I’ll just resign already. Mag-resign na lang siya,” Sec. Remulla said.

Sec. Remulla stated that he was not satisfied with Tansingco’s leadership at the agency, citing several issues. One such issue was the issuance of working visas, which he questioned, but the BI chief allegedly did nothing to address the concerns.

“There were many; the issuance of working visas was very questionable. I called his attention, but he did nothing,” he said.

Following this, on the same day, Presidential Communications Chief Cesar Chavez confirmed that Tansingco had been relieved of his position.
