(August 1, 2022) – Former President Fidel Ramos will be remembered for the significant reforms that he helped institute during his administration, a political analyst said on Sunday, recalling the legacies left by the late leader after his death at the age of 94.
Prof. Edmund Tayao, the executive director of the Local Government Development Foundation, stressed that many of Ramos’ accomplishments left a lasting impact as they can still be felt even beyond his administration.
“He was really a standard-setter,” said Tayao on One News Now. “He’s not the kind of president who’s just going to leave so much with his [people]. He’s really hands-on. Anything that’s going to pass Congress will definitely be reviewed by him. He really contributed so much to the policies enacted during his tenure.”
Ramos, who served as the country’s 12th president from 1992 to 1998, was known for his policies that helped revive the economy by opening the country to foreign investments through liberalization and deregulation. A report by the New York Times said his term generated $20 billion in foreign investments.
President Bongbong Marcos Jr. extended his condolences to the family of Ramos. The cigar-chomping soldier-turned-statesman broke with the late dictator father of Marcos and went on to become one of the heroes of the EDSA People Power in 1986 that toppled the iron-fisted leader from decades-long power.
“We did not only lose a good leader but also a member of the family,” said Marcos in a statement. “I call on all Filipinos to pray for the eternal repose of Mr. Ramos. The legacy of his presidency will always be cherished and will be forever enshrined in the hearts of our grateful nation.”
Former President Rodrigo Duterte shared similar sentiments following the death of Ramos. Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio also lauded Ramos as “a real patriot” who helped inspire public servants to maintain their integrity.
Department of Foreign Affairs secretary Enrique Manalo said Ramos was a “visionary” in terms of foreign policy, adding the country lost “one of the chief statesmen.” With Ramos at the helm, the Philippines was hailed the “Tiger Cub Economy in Asia.”
“His leadership through the Philippines 2000 steered our country to greater economic heights, with his opening of the Philippine economy and relentless campaigning for the country’s economic potential to the international community,” said Manalo.
Carlito Galvez Jr., the presidential adviser on peace, reconciliation, and unity, described Ramos as a “statesman, development planner, and visionary” who helped in brokering peace pacts with rebel groups.
Ramos was known for spearheading the peace agreement with the Moro National Liberation Front in 1996.
“It was during the term of FVR that government peace negotiating panels with the communist insurgents, military rebels and the Moro groups were established. These peace panels would be crucial in moving forward the peace talks with the rebel organizations,” said Galvez.
