(October 21, 2022) – Tropical Depression Obet is expected to cross the northernmost province of Luzon on Friday night, less than a week after a tropical storm slammed the same northern parts of the country, the weather bureau said.
Packing center winds of 55 kph and gustiness of up to 70 kph, Obet was last located at 7 p.m. over the coastal waters of Basco, Batanes moving westward at 25 kph , said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
The tropical cyclone wind signal (TWCS) No. 1 has been hoisted in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the municipalities of Santa Ana and Gonzaga in the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan, PAGASA said.
The storm is forecasted to continue tracking generally westward until tomorrow, with its center passing through or near the northernmost archipelagic province of Batanes on Friday night, PAGASA said. The storm is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday morning.
“Obet is forecast to gradually intensify and may reach tropical storm category tomorrow morning,” PAGASA said in its 8 p.m. bulletin. Further intensification is likely once the tropical cyclone moves over the West Philippine Sea.”
The winds are expected to cause “minimal to minor threat to life and property,” although PAGASA warned that the rains could potentially cause flooding and landslides, especially in “areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards.”
Last Sunday, Tropical Storm Neneng affected almost 52,000 families in northern Luzon as it dealt heavy rains and floods in the area, based on data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The storm caused damages to agricultural properties and infrastructures estimated at P366 million and P82 million, respectively.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) field office in Ilocos Region has said they are now preparing to augment local government units (LGUs) in areas that will be affected by the incoming storm.
DSWD is also preparing family food packs to families and individuals who are now bracing for another storm not long after they were affected by Neneng, the office said in a Facebook post.
