(August 14, 2023) – After drawing criticisms online, an official on Monday claimed that the government did not use public funds for a fashion show at Malacañang that featured the collection of a fashion designer last week.
Dina Arroyo Tantoco, who works as the deputy social secretary, said the government had private partners in the event titled “Isang Pilipinas,” which showcased Michael Leyva’s fashion collection, at the Goldenberg Mansion last August 8.
“The objective of the series is to provide a platform for Filipino artists to show their work in a historical setting relevant to our cultural identity. The government (did) not spend anything on the event because it is paid for by the designers and private institutions they (partnered) with,” said Tantoco in a statement.
She added that the event sought to highlight the collaborative efforts in the fashion industry.
“The output is a collaboration between various creatives in the industry and creates awareness, thereby generating demand, for local fabrics and designs, which have always been instrumental to our cultural identity,” noted Tantoco.
In a report by the Philippine Star, the event forms part of a series of cultural shows led by first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.
It was also reported that the pieces used woven fabric sourced from different areas in the Philippines to highlight their “rich culture, heritage, and history.” Some public officials modeled the pieces made by Leyva.
A day after the event, Araneta-Marcos shared a picture taken in front of the historic mansion.
Videos circulating on social media showed that several celebrities and public figures were in attendance. A photo and video service company also posted snaps from the event.
But this did not sit well with some netizens, saying the luxurious style stands in stark contrast with the poor conditions that many Filipinos are facing.
One social media user pointed out that many communities are still submerged in floods and consumers are still reeling from high prices of goods and commodities.
Others, meanwhile, described the fashion show as “Imeldific” since it has parallelisms with the lavish affairs held by former first lady Imelda Marcos during the kleptocratic rule of her husband, the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr., while many Filipinos were suffering.
I just want to say, I have nothing against fashion designer Michael Leyva. I think his gowns are fabulous. But THAT fashion show held by the modern day MARIE was really bad optics and the fabulous gowns became a vulgar display of ostentation and scandalous wealth amid poverty.

The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) stressed that the administration should focus on addressing problems like high debt, skyrocketing prices, and agricultural woes instead of conducting such events.
“It’s not appropriate for First Lady Liza to host an insensitive fashion show while the country is deep in debt, this after many were affected by recent calamities,” KMP chairperson Danilo Ramos was quoted as saying in a report by Philstar.com.
