(July 22, 2022) – Despite the clamor from fans, former Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin chose not to dwell on speculations about the possibility of him returning to the helm of the squad following the country’s disappointing performance in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.
Baldwin stressed that the “tough times” are part of the process but the team needs all the support it can get moving forward. He added that he’s not dwelling on possibly taking the driver’s seat again.
“I don’t speculate,” said Baldwin, the coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, in an interview with YYC Athletes during a scouting trip in Canada. “If that happens, it happens. That bridge will be something that I will look at if and when that happens. But I’m not waiting for that. I’m not expecting that.”
On Tuesday, Gilas Pilipinas was routed by Japan, 102-81 in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup and failed to enter the quarterfinals of the tournament for the first time in 15 years. The country finished in ninth place.
Supporters of the team could not help but vent their frustration over the sorry situation and string of dismal finishes in recent months, calling for the resignation of coach Chot Reyes.
The veteran mentor, who steered Gilas Pilipinas to the country’s return to the FIBA World Cup in 2014, has apologized for the results but stressed that the learning curve is still high.
“We wish we’ve performed better in the competitions that we’re joining. Unfortunately, the provisions are not as ideal as we want, and I don’t want to go into details because I don’t want to make excuses,” said Reyes on One News’ The Chiefs on Wednesday. “But I just ask for more understanding and patience.”
Baldwin, who piloted Gilas Pilipinas to a 6-0 record in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers before resigning last January, said he will continue supporting the team even if he’s no longer part of it. He said the squad was the “core reason” why he came to the country nearly a decade ago. While he’s no longer the coach, he said he has always been “extremely grateful” for the opportunities that came his way in the country.
“I’ve enjoyed every moment with them,” said Baldwin. “I never go in-depth into those issues that arose. They (the issues) were hurtful (and) were difficult to handle, but I pride myself on being professional.”
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is set to meet on August 1 to discuss further preparations for the 2023 FIBA World Cup. SBP president Al Panlilio on Friday urged all stakeholders to support Gilas Pilipinas “with the goal of forming a competitive squad.”
Baldwin encouraged the fans to do the same.
“People have got to get behind. They’ve got to love this team with a passion. And I’m not a part of it now but I love it with a passion,” said Baldwin.
