(June 22, 2021) – Father’s Day became a day of mourning for one family in Tondo, Manila.
A 63-year-old man was killed in Brgy. 91 on Sunday morning after he was shot by his friend who allegedly became enraged about a kare-kare joke.
The murder of Arsenio Dela Cruz was caught on CCTV and the suspect 55-year-old Enrique Calila has already been arrested by the Manila Police District (MPD).
According to the victim’s friend Grace Tiongson, the tension began when Calila responded to what Dela Cruz had to say about kare-kare. The two kalesa drivers were hanging out at a horse stable near Dela Cruz’s house.
Ang sabi niya, ‘Ano, kare-kare, papakain mo sa aso lang?'” said Tiongson in an interview with News 5.
Dela Cruz, a kalesa driver, however, carried on with his jokes about kare-kare.
She added the verbal spat even reached a point where Calilac said it would be better for Dela Cruz if he just kills his dogs.
Nagbibiruan lang tayo,'” said Tiongson.
Consecutive gunshots were then heard in the area. That’s when Tiongson saw that a bloodied Dela Cruz was on the floor. He was rushed to the hospital but it was too late.
Calilac was seen fleeing with a man named Mark Lester Isavedra.
The two checked into a motel in Rizal Avenue in Tayuman to hide. But after a day, the Calilac surrendered to the MPD.
Dahil lang sa ulam?,” said the victim’s daughter Mary Paula Dela Cruz. “Isa lang naman tatanong ko. Bakit? ’Yun lang.”
Calilac will face a homicide case, while Isavedra will face charges of obstruction of justice.
Dela Cruz’s family has requested residents who witnessed the shooting to help them so that Calilac can be prosecuted.
