(February 1, 2025) – Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio on Saturday confirmed that she is “seriously considering” running for president in the 2028 national elections.
Duterte-Carpio admitted this after attending a private event in Panabo, Davao del Norte.
“I’m seriously considering running in 2028 presidential elections dahil sa mga nakikita natin sa bayan natin na dapat ayusin, na dapat baguhin,” said the Vice President in an exclusive interview with News5.
“Kailangan maging competitive tayo sa mga kapitbahay natin dito sa ating region at sa buong mundo. Napag-iiwanan na ang Pilipinas at ayaw natin ‘yun.”
Duterte-Carpio previously kept quiet about her 2028 political plans, saying she would focus on her duties as vice president instead.
She is currently facing three impeachment complaints, all accusing her of betrayal of public trust, among others, over the alleged misuse of confidential funds of P612 million.
Still, the Vice President remains among the top choices for president in public surveys.
When asked about her participation in the upcoming 2025 midterm elections, she explained she is still weighing her options.
“Hindi ko alam kung makakatulong o makakasama sa mga kandidato ang pag-endorso ko sa kanila. Kaya pinag-iisipan ko ‘yun nang maayos,” added Duterte-Carpio.
Duterte-Carpio previously ran alongside Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. in the 2022 national elections as part of the UniTeam, a ticket of Marcos’ Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) and Duterte-Carpio’s Lakas-CMD party.
The UniTeam, however, was dissolved due to political differences.
Last December, lawmakers approved a P733-million budget for the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in the 2025 national budget, down from the original P2.037 billion. This came after tensions between Duterte-Carpio and some committee members over her refusal to defend her budget and answer allegations of funds misuse.
In January, the OVP announced it would discontinue medical and burial assistance this year following the budget cut.
“(Pero) ang Office of the Vice President satellite offices patuloy sila sa aming proyekto sa (OVP),” said Duterte-Carpio.
