(September 19, 2024) – A survey released on Thursday showed that almost 40% of Filipinos believed their quality of life improved in the last 12 months despite the increase in hunger and self-rated poverty.
Social Weather Stations (SWS) explained that “gainers” or individuals who perceived their lives improved scored +15 in the second quarter of the year—classified as “very high.”
“The June 2024 net gainer score was 10 points up from fair +5 in March 2024 and December 2023,” said SWS in a media release. “It was just 3 points below the very high +18 in December 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.”
It added that 37% of Filipinos deemed their lives stayed the same, while 23% said it got worse.
“The net gainer score was generally negative until 2015 when it rose to positive numbers until the sharp decline beginning with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. It has since trended back upwards but has not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels,” added SWS.
The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews among 1,500 adults nationwide from June 23 to July 1 this year with a margin of error of ±2.5%.
Meanwhile, families who experience involuntary hunger rose to around 18% in June 2024 from 14% in March 2024, added SWS. Also last June, families who rated themselves as poor increased to 58% from 46% in March.
In his State of the Nation Address last July, Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. admitted that Filipinos continue to grapple with high food prices. The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that inflation eased to 3.3% last August from 4.4% in July.
