(November 9, 2024) – Homegrown Filipino beauty brand Happy Skin, together with the non-governmental organization HOPE and TikTok Shop, teamed up to build a classroom in Bulualto, San Miguel, Bulacan.
Through TikTok’s ‘Buy Local Shop Local’ campaign, a program that supports local employment and helps build classrooms in underserved communities, TikTok Shop helped Happy Skin gather funds for the project through the products they sell online.
A percentage of every product purchased through Happy Skin’s TikTok Shop channel was allocated to funding the classroom. HOPE then assisted in identifying Bulualto, one of the oldest elementary schools in Bulacan, which suffers from a shortage of classrooms, as their beneficiary.
As students and parents eagerly gathered at the covered court of Bulualto Elementary School to witness a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for their new classroom, Happy Skin Chief Executive Officer Jacqueline Gutierrez reflected on the promise they made last year to donate a classroom, which has now come to fruition.
“We’re very proud and thankful that we were given the opportunity to be able to do this,” she told News5.
“Nakakatuwa, sabi ko sa mga bata na ‘yung act of giving is really a very special gift that they gave us. A lot of people think na it feels better when you receive but when you give, it feels so much more,” she added.
Gutierrez emphasized that their beauty company not only wants their employees and customers to look and feel good, she wants them to also do good. Through this effort, they take pride in highlighting education for its vital role to ensure a bright future for Filipino children.
“There really are a lot of things that we can do, but we truly believe in equipping kids with the proper skills and knowledge so they can fend for themselves and grow as an individual… and the most useful thing to help them is by helping in building their education properly.”
This long lasting legacy goes beyond skin deep. Gutierrez expressed that this simple classroom is not just a facade, it transcends beyond education and it can be found useful in more ways than one. She cited that during typhoons, schools are one of the first places people go to as it also provides shelter for other people, “so yung tulong talaga ay nagro-roll lang, at malaking bagay ‘yun for us.”
Gutierrez also pointed out that this project would not be possible if not for the growth their local brand experienced last year on the competitive e-commerce landscape by utilizing TikTok’s digital platform.
“The growth of TikTok Shop was really unprecedented, even for me, we are in all the e-commerce channels, but never have I seen growth in the level of how TikTok is growing now. As an entrepreneur I’m very happy that they came to the Philippines and gave us an opportunity to be a player in their platform.”
This partnership allowed local brands like Happy Skin to interact more with their customers through their mobile phones on a personal level. In a sense, they were able to create more meaningful connections with their audience.
With this in mind and as the beauty brand grows, Happy Skin commits to build more classrooms in the future.
