(OCTOBER 19, 2021) – Unilever Philippines, in partnership with Pasig LGU, runs “Walastik na Pasig” to help residents build better waste management habits and earn some incentives in return for plastic waste.
Mayor Vico Sotto said this project will help not only the environment but also its residents as they may augment their daily needs through plastic collection.
In a Senate Economic Planning Office report, the Philippines increased its waste generation to 40,087.45 tons per day in 2016. Most of these come from highly urbanized cities, like Pasig. Per capita, the estimated average of waste generation was 0.40 kilograms a day.
Because of the threat of climate change and the growing problem of waste, the local government of Pasig made its commitment to reduce waste production by 20% in 2025.
“’Yung ibang plastic natin, napupunta sa ilog natin, napupunta sa mga drainage natin, kaya kailangan talaga, gawan natin ito ng solusyon.” Sotto stated. “I hope that the city of Pasig will be able to strengthen its working relationship with Unilever and Cemex.”
FLAGSHIP PROGRAM FOR PLASTIC COLLECTION
The “Walastik na Pasig” program is part of the flagship collection program “Misis Walastik,” the longest-running environmental sustainability initiative of Unilever Philippines. This project has reached 400 barangays in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
“Malaki pong bagay ito sa mga nanay lalo na po ‘yung medyo nasa low income group. Malaki pong katipiran sa kanilang budget na manlibre ang ilang supplices sa kanilang mga tahanan,” said Sheila Marie Agustin De Asis, the barangay captain of Manggahan.
Residents are encouraged to collect waste in three easy steps: KOLEK (“collect”), KILO (“weigh”), and KITA (“pay/earn”).
To participate, residents must first collect and segregate their clean and dry flexible plastic waste. In light of the pandemic, Unilever worked with LGU officials and “Walastik Junkshops” to allow residents to bring their collection to their nearest community junkshop or material recovery facility while practicing all necessary safety protocols. Residents may claim cash incentives for every kilo of plastic they surrender.
“Winning partnerships play a key role in keeping plastic waste out of our rivers and waterways and we are happy that we have the City of Pasig and Cemex Philippines working with us on this program,” said Ed Sunico, Unilever Philippines VP for Sustainable Business and Communication.
