(November 25, 2024) — Four new names have been enshrined in the Palanca Awards Hall of Fame: Eros Sanchez Atalia, Mikael de Lara Co, Miguel Antonio Alfredo V. Luarca, and Joshua Lim So, all of whom have achieved the distinction of winning First Prize in the prestigious literary competition five times across various categories. With their inclusion, the elite circle of honorees now totals 30 members.
The inductees were honored in a ceremony held on Friday at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
National Artists Virgilio Almario, Gémino Abad, and Resil Mojares (represented by Karina Bolasco) were also recognized with the “Natatanging Gawad Dangal ng Lahi” Award for their outstanding contributions to Philippine literature.
Internationally acclaimed filmmaker and 12-time Palanca Award winner Jun Robles Lana delivered the keynote speech. The 2006 Hall of Famer shared his experiences and triumphs in the competition, including how National Artist for Cinema Marilou Diaz-Abaya encouraged him to adapt his 1996 prize-winning work, “Mga Bangka sa Tag-Araw,” into the 1998 film “Sa Pusod ng Dagat,” which starred Jomari Yllana.
Lana was also presented with the “Gawad Dangal ng Lahi” by the Foundation, led by its president Carlos Palanca IV and spokesperson Criselda Cecilio-Palanca.
This year’s 72nd edition of the Palanca Awards received a total of 1,823 entries across 22 categories, with 60 works earning recognition. A total of 54 writers were awarded prizes in the competition’s four divisions: Kabataan, English, Filipino, and Regional Languages. All entries were meticulously evaluated by 63 judges.
The Palanca Awards remains the longest-running and most prestigious literary competition in the Philippines. Established in 1951 in memory of businessman and philanthropist Carlos Palanca Sr., the awards are sponsored by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, Inc. The Awards has honored 2,580 Filipino authors with medals and certificates — boasting an archive of 2,677 literary treasures of winning works throughout its seven-decade run.
“By focusing on comparative values of resilience, resonance, and rhetoric, writers can fend off reality, or enrich it with more embellishments of entertainment, humor, drama, or contemplation,” Cecilio-Palanca said. “Going by the treasures collected in seven decades of the Palanca Awards, Filipino writers of all generations have shown that we can keep pace with any seasonal shapes of realignment.”
