The unforgettable year of 2020 was filled with regrets, reflection, cautious optimism, and TikTok videos. How could people even survive 2020 without the life-changing, spirit-healing, Me-and-My-Jowa-inspiring powers of TikTok?
TikTok, the video-sharing social network, has been around since 2016 but it only became an omnipresent cultural force this 2020. It is now reportedly worth $100 billion and has approximately 850 million subscribers. Don’t be surprised if 849 million of those are from the Philippines.
Filipinos, among the biggest social media users in the world, easily jumped on the TikTok train. Guys like Marvin Fojas, DJ Loonyo, and Audrey Despues were catapulted to stardom, further proving the democracy of celebrity. TikTok helped many cope with the difficulties of 2020, offering a sense of happy reprieve in 60-second installments.
Here are five TikTok trends that blew up in the Philippines in 2020.
5. How You Like That Dance Challenge
Pop culture in the country in 2020 was defined by “hallyu” or wave of Korean culture. From K-Dramas on Netflix to DIY samgyupsal at home to oppa hairstyles, it felt like there was a Korean Takeover in the Philippines. Of course, it also made its way to TikTok with the How You Like That Dance Challenge.
@yanyandejesus1Who’s excited for my How You Like That dance cover? ?❤️ @newgenjade @louise.zapanta @newgenraine ##howyoulikethat♬ How You Like That – BLACKPINK
The feisty yet catchy song of popular K-pop group Blackpink was an easy choice for a dance cover. Although the steps weren’t as easy to do, many Filipinos still made their own versions, some even in full K-pop drip. Clearly, if there’s one thing Pinoys can do, it is dance. How you like that?
4. It Really Hurts
How to even explain this? It’s quite different from most challenges involving dancing on TikTok. That’s perhaps the easiest (or laziest) way to put it. But really, the hilarious trend just speaks for itself. It’s one of those you-have-to-see-to-understand-it things. Because it’s harder to comprehend than, as the song implies, unrequited love.
@mimiyuuuhTHIZ ?? PART ?? IZZA ?? VIBE ??♬ It Really Hurts (Contains music from: Kabet – Gagong Rapper) – mimiyuuuh
Popularized by superstar vlogger Mimiyuuuh, the It Really Hurts gimmick gave Filipinos a collective headache, especially to those who can’t understand it. The fun in it, however, is exactly that. Sometimes, dancing stupidly is the best. Plus, if anything, it gave renewed popularity to the old rap song by Gagong Rapper. Now, that’s a name that really hurts.
3. Wipe It Down Challenge
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the slay-est of them all? The best thing about TikTok is it showcases creativity. The Wipe It Down Challenge is a good example. Someone wears a regular outfit in front of a mirror, then after wiping it, he or she will appear with an entirely different look—usually grander and more, as millennials say it, fire.
@chedigusay_My mirror became crystal clear as I ##wipeitdown for almost 2 hours lol♬ #WIPEITDOWN – BMW KENNY
The name of the challenge comes from the accompanying song: “Wipe It Down” by BMW Kenny. Remember that old Makeup Transformation Challenge? This is an upgrade of that. As Time Magazine put it, it’s like a modern-day version of Cinderella. Except there’s no glass shoe. Only glass skins.
2. Marikit
There were copious amounts of dancing on TikTok this year, but in the Philippines, one of the biggest was Marikit. Hahstags related to it are among the top 10 most trending ones in 2020. It’s simple enough: People just dance to the rap song “Marikit” by Juan & Kyle, including that infectious snare drums part in the chorus.
@blytheDi na kinaya ng pin ko sa buhok hahaha ##fyp ##marikit♬ Binibining Marikit – Austin Ong
But of course, some Filipinos weren’t content in just simply gyrating to it. Some were definitely more extra, using costumes, props, and glitzy backgrounds to show off their talent. But more importantly, it showcased the diverse beauty of Filipinas. The song might just be a one-hit wonder, but marikit Pinays are forever.
1. The Weekend
The song that launched a thousand TikToks. Another good thing about TikTok is that it gave previously underappreciated songs new life. Just like the 2017 RNB single “The Weekend (Remix)” by SZA and Calvin Harris. The catchy beat coupled with simple dance steps made it easy for people to make their own versions. So easy, even Harry Roque was able to do it.

It took TikTok by storm globally, and naturally, the Philippines wasn’t left behind. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many Filipinos already joined in on the fun. But when people were forced to stay home, it blew up even more, making every day feel like, um, the weekend.
