(March 29, 2022) – The Nacionalista Party, one of the oldest political parties in the country, on Tuesday threw its support to the presidential bid of the only son and namesake of the late dictator, further boosting his front runner position with almost a month before the elections.
The political party of former Senate president Manuel Villar, one of the richest families in the country announced its decision to support Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
“We believe that Bongbong and Inday Sara’s message of unity is crucial in binding our country together and inspiring our people as we rebuild not only from the pandemic but also from the political chasm that divides us,” said Villar said in a statement.
Villar said the leading tandem “both have platforms of government, qualifications and track record to lead our country towards unity and prosperity” despite their unclear platforms due to their refusal to participate in debates.
It was not a surprise since Mark , the son of Villar and his wife incumbent Senator Cynthia Villar, is running in the senatorial slate of Marcos and Carpio.
Marcos’ spokesman, Vic Rodriguez welcomed the endorsement.
“The NP endorsement will surely serve as another insurance to the bandwagon of support for the UniTeam from political parties which comes at a time when a clear 61 percent majority of our people have again made known their preference for Bongbong Marcos to be our next president founded on an equally high 53 percent trust rating for him.,” said Rodriguez.
Marcos Jr. had been with the Nacionalista Party since 2009 until he switched to his current political party, three-year old Partido Federal ng Pilipinas in 2019.
His son, Sandro Marcos, is running for Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative under NP.
The presidential and vice-presidential frontrunners have secured the support of another major political party after being endorsed by the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), the political party of the president.
Manny Villar was awarded the radio frequencies of the broadcasting giant ABS-CBN which the Duterte administration shut down in 2020 due to issues on franchise renewal.
