Bondoc: ex-president Duterte’s ‘kill senators’ remark a ‘very clear joke’

(February 17, 2025) — Senatorial candidate Jimmy Bondoc on Monday described former President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial “kill senators” remark as nothing more than a joke.

In an interview on Morning Matters on One News, Bondoc emphasized that Duterte’s comment should not be taken literally, noting its context and delivery.

“Do you really think the former president [Duterte] mean it? Magpapapatay siya ng mga senador? Lahat po ito is really just nagco-compete lang po sila lahat for your ears, for your attention dahil mahal po ang air time,” Bondoc said.

“Very clear it was a joke, even the way he said it, but again, I’m not defending anyone, very clearly it was a joke.”

Recently, at PDP-Laban’s proclamation rally in San Juan City, Duterte jokingly suggested of killing 15 senators to make way for his party’s senatorial candidates.

Meanwhile, Bondoc believes that Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio’s alleged assassination threat against President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Romualdez was a conditional threat.

“‘Yung kay VP Sara, it seems less like a joke ‘no. Hindi siya joke but I do go with the argument that it’s a conditional threat.”

“If you go strictly by the words there was a condition. Ibig sabihin, i’m not gonna do it unless they kill me, self defense ‘yon,” Bondoc added.

Running under the administration’s Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas, Bondoc further urged voters to scrutinize candidates’ track records instead of being swayed by political theatrics.

“Ang sakin po, tingnan niyo ang history namin, ng mga kumakandidato, nothing more— suriin niyo na lamang ‘yung mga tao. ‘Wag na po kayo magpaloko,” Bondoc stated dismissing old political campaign tactics.

Bondoc maintained that his stance was not about absolving Duterte-Carpio or siding with former president Duterte.
