(February 16, 2025) -Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. on Saturday took a subtle jab at his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte’s remarks of killing 15 senators to vacate Senate seats during the Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas campaign rally in Davao del Norte.
Tenkyuuu, ingats ulit!
In his speech, Marcos questioned why certain individuals seemed to think that eliminating people was the only solution to national issues.
Nakakapagtaka kung bakit ganoon,” Marcos said, hinting at ex-president Duterte’s recent joke about killing other senatorial aspirants.
Last Thursday at PDP-Laban’s proclamation rally in San Juan City, Duterte jokingly suggested of killing 15 senators to make way for his party’s senatorial candidates.
“Marami kasi sila [the senators] ano ang dapat gawin natin?
The former president had recently sparked backlash after his killing remarks.

Marcos did not name Duterte directly during his speech at Davao — long considered the Duterte’s bailiwick.
Despite Davao being Duterte’s stronghold, it did not deter the senatorial candidates of Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas from campaigning in the province.
“Yung sinasabi ninyo na this is a territory o baluwarte ng [mga] Duterte— I am from Davao Oriental. Erwin Tulfo said in a press conference prior to their campaign rally.
Former Senate president Tito Sotto, meanwhile, believes that the issue of “bailiwick” is not a major factor in midterm elections, as only 35% of the nationwide vote is required to secure a Senate seat. He pointed out that strongholds tend to have a bigger impact during presidential elections.
“As far as ‘baluwarte’ is concerned, senatorial ito. You get 35% of the votes, nationwide, you win, 100%, you will be in the [Magic 12],”
In the 2022 presidential elections, Marcos secured more than 80% of the votes in Davao del Norte—a time when he was still allied with Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.
