(August 16, 2024) – A former intelligence officer of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Friday revealed the alleged link of several members of the Duterte family and former presidential economic adviser Michael Yang to the drug trade.
Jimmy Guban claimed that Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio’s husband, Mans Carpio, and her brother, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, and Michael Yang were involved in the smuggling of kilos of shabu worth P11 billion in 2018. They were concealed in magnetic lifters discovered at the Manila International Container Port.
Guban added that it was Davao City Coun. Small Abellera Jr. who introduced him to the smuggling operation in 2017 and to the Dutertes and Yang.
“As their business partner and trusted man, he (Abellera) was tasked to facilitate the release of shipments from the Bureau of Customs,” said Guban during the probe of the quad-committee of the House of Representatives.
He furthered that Abellera asked him to make concessions on certain shipments.
“Luwagan mo ‘yang shipments na ‘yan, alam mo naman na kina Michael Yang, Pulong, at Mans ‘yan,” added Guban.
Described by Abellera as a “big-time importer of drugs,” Yang was also allegedly linked to a P3.6 billion shabu bust in Pampanga last year. The committee on dangerous drugs already ordered Yang’s arrest for repeatedly refusing to attend the hearings. He is reportedly out of the country.

Guban also retracted his testimonies during the hearings of the Senate in 2018 about the personalities behind the shabu shipment.
He claimed that current Presidential Task Force on Media Security executive director Paul Gutierrez ordered him to not mention Carpio, Duterte, and Yang in his testimonies. Guban said he followed the instruction because of the death threats to him and his family.
“Alam namin kung saan nakatira ang pamilya mo, alam din namin na nasa Makati ang anak mong lalaki,” said Guban, referring to what Gutierrez told him.
As of writing, the Dutertes and Yang have yet to comment on Guban’s revelations.
