Group slams Dizon’s appointment as DOTr chief due to ‘notorious’ record

(February 13, 2025) – A transportation group on Thursday sounded the alarm over the appointment of Vince Dizon as the new chief of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), citing the allegations against him.

Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) claimed that Hizon is “notorious” for alleged corruption, corporate servitude, and human rights violations.

“Under his watch, ancestral lands were plundered, families were uprooted, and generations of indigenous heritage were erased—all to serve foreign monopolies and corporate interests,” said PISTON in a statement.

In a statement today, the Malacañang confirmed that Dizon will replace Jaime Bautista, who retired as DOTr secretary due to health reasons, starting February 21.

PISTON alleged that Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. appointed Dizon to escalate the government’s attacks on public transportation workers.

“We fear he will now facilitate the corporate takeover of our streets through jeepney phaseout, and the further marginalization of drivers and operators struggling under the government’s anti-poor, pro-monopoly ‘modernization’ schemes,” added PISTON.

Dizon, among the key architects of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s Build, Build, Build Program, previously served as the chief of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA).

In 2019, sectoral groups accused Dizon and the BCDA of “violent displacement” of Aeta communities in Capas, Tarlac for the construction of New Clark City for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Dizon is facing graft and malversation charges filed by the Citizens Crime Watch Association for entering an anomalous joint venture with Malaysian firm MTD Capital Berhad for New Clark City worth P11 billion.

Dizon and organizers of the 2019 SEA Games were also criticized for “wasteful spending” and “cronyism” on the controversial P55 million cauldron used in the event’s torch-lighting ceremony.

“We will not entrust our futures to a government that prioritizes profit over people. Dizon’s appointment only deepens our resolve to resist. We call on all drivers, operators, commuters, and the Filipino public to unite against this tyrannical alliance of political dynasties, corporate greed, and foreign domination,” said PISTON.
