(October 28, 2028) – Sen. Robin Padilla and Sen. Bong Go defended former president Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial war on drugs, during the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee hearing on Monday.
This came after Sen. Risa Hontiveros raised concerns about Duterte’s statement where he allegedly expressed willingness to kill Filipinos for what she described as his distorted view of peace and order.
Hontiveros pointed out instances where innocent lives, including children, were lost, questioning if these individuals truly resisted arrest.
My message to you is this— there is no honor in punishment like tokhang it should not be an honor to be called ‘the punisher’ when thounsand of innocent people including babies have died in your name,” said Hontiveros.
“Hindi kailanman ipagmamalaki ng mga Pilipino ang war on drugs na ‘yan,” she added.
Sen. Padilla, meanwhile, countered by highlighting the fear instilled in criminals during Duterte’s administration, crediting it as an effective tactic.
He urged the Senate to approach the investigation without political bias, emphasizing that drugs remain a global problem and that it needs resolute action.
Sen. Bong Go, one of Duterte’s closes allies, also echoed support for former president’s approach, citing the pervasive drug syndicates and the infiltration of the police force before Duterte took office.
Go said.
“Kaya siya [Duterte] nanalo, dahil sa kaniyang campaign promised, to get rid of illegal drugs, criminality and corruption,” Go remarked.
He expressed disappointment that Duterte, once lauded for his anti-drug campaign, now faces blame.
