OCTA: 57% of adult Filipinos not in favor of legalizing divorce in the Philippines

(August 16, 2024) – A recent OCTA Research survey on public perceptions of legalizing divorce in the Philippines reveals that 57% of adult Filipinos are not in favor of legalizing divorce in the country.

This marks a 6% increase from the 51% recorded in the previous nationwide survey conducted by OCTA Research in the third quarter of 2023.

Meanwhile, 39% of Filipinos support legalizing divorce, and 4% remain undecided.

Support for passing the divorce bill is highest in the Visayas at 50%, followed by 46% in the National Capital Region (NCR), and Mindanao and Balance Luzon with both 35%.

On the other hand, the percentage of adult Filipinos who are not in favor of legalizing divorce is highest in Balance Luzon at 61%, followed by 57% in Mindanao, 50% in NCR, and 49% in the Visayas. Additionally, the highest percentage of undecided Filipinos is in Mindanao at 7%.

The survey also shows that 55% of Filipino adults would not vote for a candidate who supports legalizing divorce, while 39% would back such a candidate, and 5% are undecided.

In Balance Luzon, 57% of respondents, and in Mindanao 58% of respondents, would not support a candidate promoting the legalization of divorce. In the Visayas the opinion is evenly divided about voting for a candidate promoting divorce with 50%. Meanwhile, 44% of respondents in NCR expressed willingness to vote for a pro-divorce candidate.

The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews from June 6 to July 1, 2024, involving 1,200 respondents aged 18 and above.

The survey has a ±3% margin of error at a 95% confidence level. Subnational estimates for the geographic areas covered in the survey have the following margins of error at a 95% confidence level: ±6% for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
