(November 6, 2023) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday assured that it is working closely with its regional and provincial units to bring to justice the perpetrators of the killing of a radio broadcaster in Misamis Occidental.
PNP chief P/Gen. Benjamin Acorda said they are conducting an in-depth investigation on the fatal attack against Juan Jumalon, also known as DJ Johnny Walker, in line with the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Aside from the cartographic sketch of the suspect released earlier today, Acorda said the authorities are digging deeper to find those involved in the crime in the municipality of Calamba.
“Investigation is ongoing and nag-commit naman ang ating RD (regional director) that they will do all their best to solve the case,” Acorda told the media.
Jumalon, an anchor for 94.7 Calamba Gold FM, was broadcasting from his home when an unidentified assailant shot him dead. The gruesome crime was caught during the live program. Aside from the gunman, there’s another suspect who stayed at the gate of Jumalon’s residence, based on the CCTV footage.
Acorda said he was shocked by the manner through which the crime was carried out.
“The way it was done was very blatant,” said Acorda. “Lawlessness talaga ang ipinakita roon.”
As of now, Acorda said the authorities are looking at different angles and possible motives for the crime. It’s still unclear if the crime had something to do with his job as a journalist or if the crime was rooted on a personal matter.
“May mga nabanggit na mga motibo. But for the sake of the conduct of the investigation, we don’t want (to entertain) speculations kasi baka ma-preempt natin ‘yung investigation,” added Acorda.
In issuing his directive to the PNP, Marcos stressed that the brazen killing of Jumalon should have no place in a democratic society.
Meanwhile, some lawmakers also spoke up after Jumalon’s death. Among those who issued statements were Sen. Bong Revilla and Sen. Robin Padilla who called on law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability over this crime.
“Ang anumang karahasan sa mga mamamahayag ay karahasan laban sa ating demokrasya. This, in no uncertain terms, is an affront to our free press,” said Revilla.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez said they were “deeply saddened” by the death of Jumalon, adding that the media attacks are “unacceptable and deeply troubling.”
“The freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our democracy. Every journalist deserves the right to exercise their profession without fearing for their safety or their lives,” said Romualdez in a statement.
Jumalon is the 199th journalist killed since 1986 and the fourth one under the Marcos administration, according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines.
Reiterating their call to end impunity, progressive groups gathered at the Commission on Human Rights last night to slam the killing of Jumalon and the persistent threats that Filipino journalists face.
