(October 29, 2024) – Philippines’ Reality MM Studios has released the first clip of “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital,” the Philippine adaptation of the Korean hit “Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum.”
Internationally acclaimed director Erik Matti, alongside veteran filmmaker Dondon Monteverde and actor Enrique Gil, brings the film into life. This adaptation of the Korean horror success “Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum” reimagines the chilling story with a Filipino cast, exploring the haunted Xinglin Hospital in Taiwan.
The 2018 Korean version, directed by Jung Bum-shik, was a found-footage horror sensation, based on a real psychiatric hospital in Gwangju-si. The film starred Wi Ha-joon (Squid Game), Park Ji-hyun (The Divine Fury), Oh Ah-yeon (Mr. Sunshine), Moon Ye-won (Legal High), Park Sung-hoon (The Glory), Yoo Je-yoon (Extreme Job), and Lee Seung-wook (Joseon Fist). It became a major box office success, Gonjiam attracted over 2.6 million viewers and grossed $21 million, making it the second-highest-grossing Korean horror film of 2018.
The project was brought to Reality MM Studios by Creative Leaders Group 8 CEO BJ Song (Taxi Driver, Boys Over Flowers, Princess Hours).
Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital puts a Filipino twist on the acclaimed horror genre. Recently highlighted by Hollywood media outlet Variety, the adaptation stars Enrique Gil (My Ex and Whys, Seven Sundays) as he leads a group of personalities who are all playing themselves on screen including actress Jane De Leon (Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme), Alexa Miro, Rob Gomez (A Girl and a Guy), MJ Lastimosa (Day Zero), with real-life tarot reader Raf Pineda, and content creator Ryan “Zarckaroo” Azurin.
Meanwhile, known for his captivating footage of haunted and offbeat locations, Filipino content creator Ryan “Zarckaroo” Azurin with 1.6M subscribers on Youtube and 1.9M folllowers on his Facebook brings his paranormal expertise to the film.
Following the found-footage style of the Korean original, this adaptation sees the group of Filipino ghost hunters explore an abandoned hospital in Taiwan’s West Central District. The asylum is considered by locals as one of the most haunted places in Taiwan due to its recurring paranormal activities.
Dubbed as the Philippines’ very first meta found footage horror film, audiences and critics-alike are already looking forward to this reimagined style of filming technique.
The film was recently announced as Reality MM Studios’ official entry to the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival.
“Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” is from the production duo of Matti and Monteverde known for hits such as On the Job (2013), Honor Thy Father (2015), Seklusyon (2016), BuyBust (2018), and Kuwaresma (2019).
The film opens December 25 in the Philippines.
