(September 22, 2024) – Former leaders of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday condemned the claims made by former Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) official Raul Villanueva regarding a former police chief who helped the escape of dismissed Bamban mayor Alice Guo.
Villanueva, a retired general, made the accusations during a Senate hearing on Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) last Tuesday. According to him, a former PNP chief not only helped Guo flee but was also on the payroll of POGOs.
“This is a sweeping accusation which maligns and brings dishonor to all of us, former chiefs, who have dedicated the best years of our lives in the service of the Filipino nation. Although we are now retired, we continuously uphold our integrity to the highest standards,” said former PNP heads Gen. Renato de Villa and Gen. Edgar Aglipay in a statement.
Guo, who is under probe for her alleged connection to illegal operations of POGOs, fled the country on July 18 and was arrested in Indonesia on September 4. She was brought back to the Philippines on September 6.
She is facing charges of qualified human trafficking, money laundering, and graft. She posted bail last Friday amounting to P540,000 for her graft case.
To end the speculations, De Villa and Aglipay challenged Villanueva to name the former PNP chief he was referring to.
“It is incumbent upon himself, in the interest of transparency, fairness and justice, to identify this rogue former PNP chief to clear the names of those not involved,” added the statement.
Last Wednesday, PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil ordered a full investigation into the matter.
According to PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo, they are looking into 24 former police chiefs.
“If the information turns out false after validating the report, we hereby demand a public apology, no less, from the same officer,” said De Villa and Aglipay.
