(July 7, 2024) – A lawmaker on Sunday urged the House of Representatives to expedite the passage of the measure seeking to make Philippine history a standalone subject in high school after the recent directive of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. to the Department of Education (DepEd).
ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro stressed the urgent need to pass House Bill No. 207 to help students “become critical thinkers and informed citizens.”
“If we are serious about teaching our youth accurate and comprehensive Philippine history, we must ensure that it is given proper attention in our curriculum,” said Castro, also the minority deputy leader, in a media release.
Last Friday, Marcos ordered Sen. Sonny Angara to prioritize teaching Philippine history as incoming DepEd chief. Marcos claimed that there’s not enough discussion about the subject, which could help students understand the Filipino identity.

Castro stressed that passing HB 207 is essential to safeguard the country’s past from being marred by historical revisionism and misinformation.
“History is not ‘pagma-Marites’ or mere gossip,” said Castro. “It is a scientific discipline that requires rigorous study and fact-checking.”
She furthered that recent controversies surrounding historical narratives show the bill’s significance in ensuring that students learn the truth about the past and understand its current and future implications.
“We’ve seen attempts to distort our history, particularly the events during the Marcos Sr. era,” said Castro.
During the 2022 elections, historians and progressive groups accused Marcos and his family of whitewashing their atrocities during Martial Law and their kleptocratic rule.
Supporters of the Marcoses also propagated historical revisionism on social media.
“Let’s seize this opportunity to strengthen the teaching of Philippine history in our schools,” said Castro. “We can preserve the integrity of our national narrative for generations to come.”
Last February, Marcos emphasized the importance of learning history during the 38th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, which overthrew his late dictator father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., and their family from power in 1986.
