(July 30, 2021) – Former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV should have reached out to Vice President Leni Robredo directly if he wanted to seek clarification about the political meetings she held with two senators recently, her spokesperson said on Thursday.
Atty. Barry Gutierrez said Trillanes “overreacted” when he took his frustration to social media after reports surfaced about Robredo’s separate meetings with Sen. Ping Lacson and Sen. Richard Gordon ahead of the 2022 elections.

Barry Gutierrez.

Trillanes criticized Robredo’s political meetings, saying that the Magdalo Group—the former soldiers behind the Oakwood Mutiny in 2003—will not support her if she chooses to give way to Lacson to run for president.
Only Lacson, who recently joined the dormant Reporma party, has so far confirmed his plan to vie for the top government post. He will run with Senate President Tito Sotto III of the Nationalist People’s Coalition. Gordon, meanwhile, has also dropped hints about his intention to run for president once again.
Clarifying his reaction, Trillanes said he chose to post on social media because Robredo has repeatedly rejected his group’s requests for meetings to kickstart the poll preparations of the opposition. Invitations from both the Magdalo Group and Tindig Pilipinas were declined.
As to texting directly, for security reasons, ‘di rin ito puwedeng gawin,” wrote Trillanes on Facebook.

But Gutierrez said Trillanes should not lose his faith in Robredo if he really believes she should lead the country next year. He also clarified that the negotiations are still in their early stages, noting that the meetings do not signify the formation of any coalition yet, as what Trillanes may have supposed.
Robredo and Trillanes are presidential nominees of the opposition coalition 1SAMBAYAN, which plans to take on President Rodrigo Duterte’s allies in the 2022 elections by fielding a single slate. Trillanes earlier said he’s willing to give way to Robredo if she decides to run for president.
Robredo has not made any final decision yet, according to Gutierrez, assuring the public she will make her own announcement in due time.

It has to be a unity based on principle,” said Gutierrez.
