(June 21, 2024) – Former vice president Leni Robredo on Friday clarified that she is still mulling over running for mayor of Naga, Camarines Sur as she poured cold water on calls for her to run for senator in the 2025 midterm elections.
Robredo admitted that she wants to run for mayor in her hometown but noted that this is not yet official.
“Marami kasing mga consideration,” said Robredo in ambush interview with reporters. “Ang desisyon kasi na dito tumakbo sa Naga, mahabang pagbalanse naman ng lahat ng pros and cons—kung ano ang lalabanan, kung saan ako magiging effective, ano ‘yung kaya ng resources ko. Maraming, maraming consideration, kaya matagal ang pagdesisyon.”
She, however, stated that she’s not going to vie for a seat in the Senate. She said she already informed her political party, the Liberal Party (LP), of her decision.
“Sinabi ko (sa LP) na ang preference ko, tumakbong mayor sa Naga. Pero as I have said, parang unfair kung hindi ako officially makapagpaalam,” said Robredo.
Aside from LP, she said she has had discussions with other key figures in Naga, including Mayor Nelson Legacion last April.
“Totoo na marami na akong kinakausap na tao dito upang magkonsulta. Marami kaming inaalam na mga bagay,” noted Robredo, who served as a representative of Camarines Sur from 2013 to 2016.
After being the opposition leader during the term of former president Rodrigo Duterte, she ran for the presidency in the 2022 elections but lost to Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr.
Robredo became a viral topic on Thursday as supporters wanted her to become the next chief of the Department of Education after the resignation of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio.

In her break from politics, she established the non-profit organization, Angat Buhay, named after the extensive anti-poverty program she implemented as vice president.
