(February 3, 2025) – An official of the House of Representatives on Monday maintained that the impeachment complaints filed against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio are not “dead in the water.”
Last Friday, progressive groups held a protest to urge Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. to compel the lower chamber to proceed with Duterte-Carpio’s impeachment cases.
House of Representatives secretary general Reginald Velasco explained that he could only transmit the three impeachment complaints to House Speaker Martin Romualdez this week after giving ample time to another group supposedly planning to file a fourth one.
“Meron talagang nagbabalak (na mag-file ng fourth impeachment case) pero up to now, wala pa (kaming natatanggap), so we will have to act on it,” said Velasco.
He furthered that the petitioners for the supposed fourth impeachment case are still looking for endorsers.
“They’re looking for the fast track process, which will override these requirements. Once they filed with 103 or more congressmen, diretso na ‘yun sa plenary and Senate agad,” added Velasco, noting that it remains feasible despite the session adjourning on Friday.
It will resume after the elections in May.
An impeachment complaint takes at least 130 days to process but could be expedited.

To recall, Velasco said he would give the supposed fourth group a chance to gather signatures before forwarding the first three impeachment complaints to Romualdez by January 23. His self-imposed deadline, however, already passed, which raised suspicions that a fourth impeachment case was indeed being prepared.
Duterte-Carpio’s impeachment cases are mainly linked to her alleged misuse of over P610 million worth of confidential funds.

Last November, Marcos urged the House of Representatives to stop the impeachment push against Duterte-Carpio because she’s “unimportant” and it would be a waste of government resources.
