(December 5, 2024) – Lawmakers of the Makabayan bloc on Thursday launched a signature drive in the House of Representatives to ensure the impeachment of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio.
ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro, Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Arlene Brosas, and Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel urged their fellow lawmakers to “act with integrity and political courage” to hold Duterte-Carpio accountable.
Last Wednesday, they endorsed the second impeachment complaint filed by more than 70 individuals against Duterte-Carpio due to betrayal of public trust for her alleged irregular spending of the confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education worth over P610 million combined.
“This is not just about numbers. It is about the integrity of public service and the trust of the people. Sara Duterte must be held accountable for betraying the public’s trust,” said Manuel in a media release.
According to the 1987 Constitution, one-third or 106 of the 316 members of the lower chamber must approve the impeachment case for it to reach the Senate.
Duterte-Carpio has repeatedly snubbed hearings and quarreled with lawmakers regarding her use of confidential funds, including the P125 million spent by the OVP in just 11 days in December 2022.
“Hindi ito simpleng paglabag. Ang paggamit ng pondo sa ganitong paraan ay sistematikong pagnanakaw sa kaban ng bayan. Ang ganitong katiwalian ay hindi dapat pinapalampas,” said Castro.
The first impeachment complaint against Duterte-Carpio was filed last Monday over constitutional violations, graft and corruption, bribery, and betrayal of public trust.

“Dapat managot si VP Duterte sa kanyang mga kasalanan sa taumbayan,” stressed Brosas.
Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. urged the House of Representatives, headed by his cousin, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, to stop pushing for the impeachment of Duterte-Carpio, saying she’s “unimportant.”
