(December 2, 2024) – A progressive group on Monday asserted that the impeachment complaint filed against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio seeks to demand accountability from public officials.
Akbayan Party-list stressed that the “nightmare” caused by Duterte-Carpio for allegedly abusing her power and plundering the nation’s coffers needs to end.
“The Filipino people deserve a vice president who is ethical, accountable, and committed to public service—not one who weaponizes authority for personal gain,” said Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña in a statement.
Cendaña is among the individuals and sectoral groups that seek to impeach Duterte-Carpio on multiple grounds, including constitutional violations, graft and corruption, bribery, and betrayal of public trust.
Former senator Leila de Lima, who served as the complainants’ spokesperson, reminded Duterte-Carpio that her post is not a “throne of privilege” but a “position of trust.”
“Sara Duterte has desecrated that trust with her blatant abuses of power. This impeachment is not just a legal battle but a moral crusade to restore dignity and decency to public service,” said De Lima, the first nominee of Mamamayang Liberal Party-list for the 2025 midterm elections, in a media release.
Duterte-Carpio is being investigated by the House of Representatives for her alleged misuse of confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education, which she previously headed, worth over P610 million combined.

She was also ordered to appear by the National Bureau of Investigation to explain her grave threats against Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr., first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

The embattled vice president and her cohorts are also facing multiple charges filed by the Philippine National Police for meddling with the supposed transfer of detained OVP chief of staff Zuleika Lopez to a correctional facility in Mandaluyong.

Duterte-Carpio has repeatedly dismissed the allegations hurled against her as mere “political attacks.”
Akbayan urged Filipinos to prevent the Dutertes’ alleged corruption and “mass murder” from persisting.
“The entrenched culture of impunity and graft will only be dismantled when those who perpetuate and profit from it are held to account,” said Cendaña.
