(June 16, 2021) – President Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter has suddenly changed her tune and is now considering a run for the presidency next year, heeding calls from supporters, but quickly ruled out a tandem with her father.
Two-term Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), a regional party in the south, has given her until July to decide whether to seek the presidency or not.
“Well, pagbabago? Well, pinag-iisipan [ko] kasi a lot of people are asking me to reconsider my decision not to run for president and a lot of people are demanding to talk to me about it,” Duterte-Carpio said.

But she rejected the possibility of partnering up with her maverick father, who continued to dissuade her from seeking the presidency.
Duterte has repeatedly said his daughter should not run because women are not fit for presidency.
But Albay Congressman Joey Salceda said Duterte-Carpio plans to run for president and has started talking with some political parties to build alliances and partnerships.
A defeated presidential candidate in 2010, Gilbert Teodoro, also visited her in Davao City to “seal a deal” as her running mate next year. Teodoro, a former Tarlac congressman and former defense secretary, has not participated in elections for almost a dozen years.
There were also speculations that Duterte-Carpio will run with the late dictator’s son and namesake, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who had visited her in Davao City last month.
But she said the former senator and his sister, Senator Imee Marcos, only had lunch to celebrate her birthday.
Political observers said she may be taking a leaf from her father’s playbook, playing a reluctant candidate and will decide at the last minute to join the fray.
Her father did not file a certificate of candidacy in 2016 but changed his mind to replace Martin Dino as the official candidate of PDP-Laban party.
She denied adopting a “similar script” because she is still assessing her options.
“Walang script. Ngayon is pinag-iisipang maigi ‘yung desisyon dahil hindi siya madaling trabaho na gawin,” Duterte-Carpio said.
Duterte-Carpio is on the top of the list of possible presidential candidates in various opinion polls, besting four or five rivals, including Vice President Leonor Robredo, the potential opposition bet.
Tarpaulins urging her to run for presidency have started to sprout everywhere from January in what some critics refer to as a form of early campaigning. Duterte-Carpio denied having a hand in the early political campaigning.
