(July 27, 2024) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Saturday said around 48 million Filipinos will be exposed to pluvial flooding in the coming decades.
DENR undersecretary Noralene Uy explained that this is due to the increase in the amount of rainfall based on the projection by the National Adaptation Plan.
“Ito (pluvial flooding) ‘yung amount of rainfall na nag-e-exceed doon sa capacity ng urban water drainage system,” said Uy in a news forum.
She furthered that 50% of lands in the Philippines will be exposed to pluvial floods.
“In relation to floods, ‘yung forest natin magkakaroon ng 34% na exposure in the coming decades,” added Uy.
Recently, Super Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon submerged the National Capital Region and nearby provinces in massive flooding.
It raised questions about the reality of the 5,500 flood control projects worth P245 billion that were touted by Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. during his State of the Nation Address last Monday.
Lawmakers from both chambers of Congress already called for a probe regarding Marcos’ claim.

“It is unacceptable to hear na malakas kasi ang ulan at madami ang tubig. Hindi ‘yun dahilan. ‘Pag gumawa ka ng proyekto, sasabihin mo ba sa akin na hindi mo in-anticipate na uulan? Hindi mo in-anticipate na may bagyo?” said Villanueva.
On Friday, Marcos blamed the improper waste disposal of Filipinos for the massive flooding.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that more than 1.3 million people were affected by the inclement weather.
