(September 8, 2021) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday accepted the ruling party’s nomination as vice president for next year’s general elections, teaming up with his long-time personal assistant who was elected in the Senate two years ago.
The maverick leader is no longer eligible to seek reelection under the country’s 1987 Constitution but there is no legal impediment to run for other positions, including the vice president.
“It’s really because I want to see the continuity of my efforts even though I may not be the one giving direction,” Duterte said in accepting the nomination of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino- Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) which held a national assembly in a city north of the capital.
But the party’s nominee for president, Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go who was the president’s personal assistant, declined the nomination. He did not even physically attend the convention.
Go said he would rather assist the next president given the crisis that the country is currently facing.
“Para sa isang probinsyano at simpleng empleyado lamang na ginawa ninyong senador, malaking karangalan na po na kinonsidera ninyo sa pagka-Pangulo,” Go said in a video message. “Subalit, inuulit ko, hindi po ako interesadong tumakbo sa pagka-Pangulo sa darating na halalan.”
In an earlier statement, Go said he was more interested in running for vice president under the president’s daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio. However, political observers say the senator is playing coy.
Duterte was present, delivering a speech to lambast senators who opened an inquiry into a questionable multi-billion pesos deal with a foreign company for the supply of medical supplies as the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) rages. He also defended his officials and his personal friend, a Chinese businessman, who brokered the contract.
The Senate has ordered the arrest of the businessman after he snubbed summons by the senators twice.
In the convention, the ruling party also announced its senatorial line up to fill 12 vacant seats next year. The ticket includes six administration officials – Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello II, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, government spokesman Harry Roque, Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar, and Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) Chairman Greco Belgica.
Two lawmakers – Leyte Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez and House deputy speaker Rodante Marcoleta – are also in the team.
