(April 18, 2022) – A sitting senator running for president on Monday insisted he did not join calls for another candidate to withdraw and give way to a third candidate to defeat the only son of the late dictator who is leading surveys.
Panfilo “Ping” Lacosn said Manila Mayor Francisco Domagoso might be expressing his own personal opinion when he called on Vice President Leonor Robredo to withdraw. Robredo is the second in the surveys and Domagoso is third.
Lacson said he only joined the press conference with two other presidential to clear up “deception and patterned disinformation” suggesting that they will withdraw from the contest due to poor survey performance.
The senator said he had no idea Domagoso would call for Robredo to back out, an opinion which he did not share.
“Lagi akong consistent – if I detest calls for me to withdraw (just like when Cong Atienza did), I will not call on the others to do that,” Lacson said in response to media queries. He was referring to lawmaker and vice presidential candidate Lito Atienza.

Lacson, Domagoso, and former Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales appeared in a presser on Easter Sunday to push back against perceptions that the May 2022 polls had become a mere two-way match between Robredo and former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Domagoso also called on Robredo to make a “supreme sacrifice” and back out from the presidential race to help them beat the late dictator’s son.
Lacson and his running mate Vicente Sotto III dissociated from Domagoso’s calls, later saying he was not intent to push his rivals to withdraw from the elections in the same way they would oppose calls to back out from the race.
“Gusto ko lang icorrect yung impression na itong presscon is all about calling Leni to withdraw. Not at all. Sa amin walang magwi-withdraw dapat,” Lacson said on Sunday.
Recent surveys show Marcos Jr leading the presidential race, with Robredo ranking at a distant second although her preference has appeared to be catching up. Domagoso ranks behind her, but Pulse Asia’s survey found he was the most preferred second choice.
Lacson ranked fifth in the survey, just behind fellow senator and boxing icon Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao. Pacquiao was expected to attend the presser but did not show up.
Atienza last month encouraged Lacson to back out and let Sotto team up with his running mate Pacquiao to boost their chances at defeating Marcos and his running mate Sara Duterte-Carpio, who is also leading vice presidential surveys. Lacson rejected his proposal, calling it “insulting.”
Vice presidential candidate Rizalito David has also urged fellow candidates to form a “grand coalition” to defeat the Marcos-Duterte tandem. Many officials of Domagoso’s volunteers recently defected to Robredo for the same reason, urging the mayor to withdraw.
Before declaring her candidacy last year, Robredo had engaged in talks with Domagoso, Pacquiao, and Lacson to form a unified opposition, but it fell through due to political differences.
