(April 18, 2022) – An official of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s political party on Monday blamed the media for raising questions that allegedly pushed the presidential candidates to air their sentiments against Vice President Leni Robredo, insisting that was not the purpose of the press conference.
Ernest Ramel, the chairperson of Aksyon Demokratiko, claimed that the call issued by Moreno challenging Robredo to withdraw from the 2022 elections only came about because of the questions of the journalists. He added that the “persistent calls” for Moreno to withdraw were another factor.
“That’s why it went to that conversation na naging anti-Leni Robredo na talaga. It was the media who put those questions in and eventually ‘yung sentiments ng candidates came out about her,” said Ramel on ABS-CBN News Channel’s Headstart.
On Sunday, Moreno, Sen. Ping Lacson, and former Department of National Defense secretary Norberto Gonzales held a press conference at the Manila Peninsula to proclaim they will not back out of the presidential race, claiming that someone from Robredo’s camp has been pushing them to do so. They did not name a specific person.
Moreno also claimed that he was “fooled” by Robredo because she had told him that she would “never” run for president, doubting the sincerity of the unification talks last year.
Because of this, Moreno’s statement in January 2021 that he is not running for president resurfaced on social media, with many netizens calling him out for his “hypocrisy.”

The fact that those 5 held a press conference just to put down VPLR implies that they are threatened. Bukambibig ni Isko why did she change color from yellow to pink meanwhile he ran under Liberal, UNA, National Unity Party, and now Aksyon Demokratiko. Misogynist na hipokrito pa

Ramel believes there is no point in talking to Robredo privately at this point. He also blasted Robredo’s supporters for their reactions to the press conference, saying some of them had also sought Moreno to back out many times before.
In recent surveys, Moreno maintained his third-place spot behind former senator Bongbong Marcos Jr. and Robredo. But Moreno was the top second choice of voters as shown in the latest Pulse Asia survey, tallying 23%.
“This has been a persistent call by their camp and by their people, not necessarily directly from the vice president, but it’s obviously a part of their strategy to call on Mayor Isko to withdraw, probably in the hopes of his votes going to them,” said Ramel, who used to be a campaign manager of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Many people pointed out that the press conference appeared misogynistic because they were ganging up on Robredo, the lone woman in the presidential race. But Ramel insisted that it should not be framed as a gender issue.
Robredo, for her part, encouraged her supporters to focus on the campaign since they only have three weeks left.
“Kailangan ‘wag tayong magpatalo sa emosyon. Huwag nang magbitiw ng masasakit na salita. Focus na lang muna tayo sa kampanya—tao sa tao, puso sa puso,” said Robredo.
