(September 20, 2021) – Manila Mayor Isko Moreno expressed optimism that his ongoing talks with opposition candidates will arrive at a consensus “in a couple days,” pointing out his openness to team up with other parties for a common goal.
During his oath-taking ceremony on Monday as the new president of Aksyon Demokratiko, Moreno confirmed that he has already met with Vice President Leni Robredo and Sen. Manny Pacquiao to form a possible unified opposition slate for the 2022 elections. He, however, refrained from revealing specific details.
“Yes, we (Pacquiao and I) had a meeting and (also with) Vice President Robredo so we’re trying to reach out to each and everyone. Ako naman meron ako tengang lagi na puwede makinig. Wala naman masamang makinig,” said Moreno.
Robredo revealed earlier this month her exploratory talks with several possible candidates, hoping they can unite to stop the bid of President Rodrigo Duterte and his allies to stay in power. She has expressed openness to run for president next year if a united opposition picks her as the standard-bearer, pointing out that she doesn’t want to see the votes get divided to different opposition bets.
Political observers have expressed concerns that the large number of opposition candidates looking to succeed Duterte may undermine their chances of winning.
Pacquiao’s declaration to run for president under Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan on Sunday also raised questions on the progress of the discussions with Moreno and Robredo.
Moreno said he’s still hoping that he, Robredo, and Pacquiao can arrange more meetings soon. He said he is willing to work with anyone, even if it means teaming up with a candidate from a different party to unite for a common purpose.
Moreno recently earned the ire of Duterte and his cohorts after criticizing the government’s policies, including those related to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Moreno, who grew up in the tough streets of Tondo, has also fired back.
“Ang lalaki na ng tiyan niyo, ‘di pa kayo nagkakanda-ugaga. Kailan kayo mabubusog sa kapangyarihan? Kailan kayo magigising sa katotohanan?” said Moreno last September 8. “Magkikita tayo sa finals.”
He added that forming alliances and finding points of commonality despite differences in viewpoints are major keys to addressing the nation’s problems, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Healing is the key, unity, commonality at tao ang pinupuhunanan,” said Moreno. “Kaya ‘yung kami pagkakasapi-sapi naman bilang pagkakaisa sa paniniwalang kung ano ang puwede namin magawa sa sangkatauhan.”
Moreno has consistently emerged among the top candidates for president in surveys, but he has yet to unveil his decision for the 2022 elections with the filing of certificates of candidacy just a few weeks away.
Aksyon Demokratiko on Monday also welcomed former Liberal Party member and Caloocan Rep. Egay Erice and six city councilors as its new members.
