(September 10, 2021) – President Rodrigo Duterte’s political opponents should field only one standard-bearer to have better chances of winning in the 2022 elections, a political analyst said on Thursday.
Prof. Antonio Contreras of the De La Salle University pointed out that the opposition’s main problem is that many of them want to run for president, possibly hurting their chances of defeating the administration.
“The more na mas maraming kumakandidato sa kanila, the more hihina ang bawat isa sa kanila. Kaya dapat magkaisa (sila) o kung anuman, dalawa lang ang kandidato or as much as possible, isa lang,” said Contreras on One PH’s Sa Totoo Lang.
Vice President Leni Robredo, the country’s opposition leader, has been the top pick of 1SAMBAYAN as presidential candidate but she has not yet responded to the offer. Robredo has been talking to other politicians over the past months to find a common ground in hopes of forming a unified opposition.
Only Sen. Ping Lacson has officially announced his candidacy for the highest public office, with Senate Pres. Tito Sotto III serving as his running mate. Lacson identifies himself neither with the administration nor the opposition but he has recently been vocal against Duterte.
Sen. Richard Gordon has also dropped hints he might run for president while Sen. Manny Pacquiao has revealed his 22-point agenda despite being coy about his political plans. Reports said Manila Mayor Isko Moreno will also vie for the seat in Malacañang with Sen. Grace Poe as his running mate.
“This is a game theory,” said Contreras. “Kung ito ay laro, sa tingin ko mas malaki pa ang chance na ang administrasyon na magkaroon ng iisa lang na kandidato kumpara mo sa oposisyon na marami ang gustong magpabagsak.”
Opposition groups formed 1SAMBAYAN precisely to field only one pair for president and vice president in the 2022 elections since it’s the best strategy in defeating Duterte’s populist rule. But the group has been unable to finalize its final slate given that many politicians have already refused their offer.
Duterte’s allies want Sen. Bong Go to run for Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) but he turned down the offer. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio claimed she would no longer run for president after her father formally accepted PDP-Laban’s nomination to run for vice president.
Contreras predicted the administration would field former senator Bongbong Marcos Jr. as president with Duterte-Carpio or her father as running mate. This way, the two clans can consolidate their bases to win big.
He refused to buy the narrative that Duterte-Carpio would no longer seek a national post, likening the situation to a carnival or a soap opera. He also advised the opposition to closely watch the moves of the administration, raising the possibility that a “third” middle force might also arise.
