(September 9, 2021) – President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration may support the son of a late dictator as a presidential candidate with his daughter as his running mate, an analyst said on Thursday after a senator who was endorsed by the ruling party declined his nomination.
The administration cannot afford to push out former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos in the political equation for next year’s elections because of his huge following and bigger war chest, Antonio Contreras, a political science professor at the De La Salle University said.
He said it was not possible for the president and his daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio, to run for the two top positions as both of them are from the south in Mindanao. Sara is seen as a weak candidate in the capital and the main island of Luzon, where Marcos has solid support.
He said voters who contributed to Duterte’s presidential win in 2016 had also voted for Marcos for vice president. But Marcos lost to Vice President Leonor Robredo by about 200,000 votes.
In the Philippines, the president and vice president are elected separately.
On Wednesday, the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) party nominated Senator Christopher “Bong” Go as its presidential candidate, with Duterte as his running mate.
Duterte accepted the nomination, but Go declined, putting the party in limbo.
A day after Duterte’s daughter issued a statement she will not run for a national office saying she and her father have decided for only one of them to run.
Contreras did not buy the idea, saying this could be part of a teledrama.
He said the administration’s challengers have to unite if they want to win the elections, saying they will only divide the votes among themselves with too many of them running for president at the same time.
“The more na mas maraming kumakandidato, the more hihina ang bawat isa sa kanila. Kaya dapat magkaisa isa o kung ano man, dalawa lang ang kandidato and as much as possible, isa lang,” the professor said.
Contreras listed Robredo, Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno, Senators Richard Gordon, Panfilo Lacson and Emmanuel Pacquiao as possible presidential hopefuls from the opposition.
Lacson has announced his presidential run with the Senate President, Vicente “Tito” Sotto III as his running mate.
“Kung ito ay laro, sa tingin ko mas malaki pa ang chance na ang administrasyon, magkaroon ng iisa lang kandidato kumpara mo sa oposisyon na maraming gustong magpabagsak and I think sa administrasyon, I think yung dapat tinitgnan ng oposisyon,” he added.
