(September 9, 2021) – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday claimed she would no longer run for president in the 2022 elections after her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, formally accepted his nomination to run for vice president under Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
Duterte-Carpio, a consistent frontrunner in surveys, said she will give way to her father over an internal agreement that only one of them should seek a national post next year.
“I am not running for a national position as we both agreed only one of us will run for a national position in 2022,” said Duterte-Carpio in a message to reporters.
Members of her regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), have been urging her to succeed her father, giving Duterte-Carpio until October to decide. Five political parties wanted to ally with HNP to boost her candidacy.
But Duterte-Carpio has repeatedly said in the past that she would not push through with the race if her father runs for vice president, rejecting a Duterte-Duterte tandem in the 2022 elections.
Political observers and cause-oriented groups expressed doubts that Duterte-Carpio’s decision is already final since she still has one month before the filing of certificates of candidacy.
“Enough of the drama already! This is a badly written telenovela which has already run its course,” said Akbayan’s Perci Cendaña. “We urge the Filipino voters not to fall for the Dutertes’ latest cheap theatrics to keep themselves relevant in the eyes of the public. Tama na ang Duterte telenovela kung saan lahat ay kontrabida.”
Some also raised parallelisms on Duterte-Carpio’s pronouncement with the move of her father in the 2016 elections.
To recall, Duterte repeatedly insisted he would not seek the highest public office, stressing in October 2015 that “the country does not need (him).” But he eventually backtracked a month later as he promised to promote a clean and honest government, citing a huge clamor of the public convinced him to run for president.
“Ipupusta ko ang buhay ko pati kulong ko and everything, and even go to jail after. Hindi ako dadaan sa presidency na walang mangyari. Kailangan may mangyari o ayaw ko. That’s the deal,” said Duterte at that time.
It remains unclear how HNP plans to move forward given Duterte-Carpio’s latest remark. She already expressed that she’s not too warm with the idea of helping PDP-Laban, unlike what HNP did for her father in the 2016 elections.
“No. I will not share my light this time,” said Duterte-Carpio.
Several politicians have flown to Davao City in the past months in hopes of becoming Duterte-Carpio’s running mate. She said only Sen. Bong Go and Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian made a formal offer while other groups she talked to were vouching for Gilbert Teodoro and Martin Romualdez.
