(September 6, 2021) – The country’s top opposition leader and vice president on Monday said she might support two more popular politicians if they decide to form a coalition to defeat the administration’s candidates in next year’s presidential elections, sacrificing her own ambitions.
Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo, who has been holding “exploratory talks” with both Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso and boxing icon Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao in the last few months, has been urging a common opposition candidate to end President Rodrigo Duterte’s bid to stay in power through his surrogates – either his long-time personal assistant Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go or his daughter Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
“Bukas ako sa kahit ano na would put a stop to this kind of governance already,” Robredo told a cable television interview, adding if talks among them would result in a common candidate.
She said she hopes the exploratory talks she was holding with both Domagoso and Pacquiao could result in “the broadest coalition that we can form.”
Robredo said the biggest consideration is who among them has “the ability to have the broadest coalition possible” because they need “to go to 2022 with a united front.”
The vice president, who said she does not see herself as the country’s “savior”, said she continued “to give serious thoughts to a possible presidential run” keeping in mind the more than 200 groups who have been pushing her to seek the presidency.
“I keep myself close to the ground,” she said, adding she might not run for president, seek a position at her native Naga City or retire from politics.
Reacting to the vice president, Pacquiao said he is also thinking about his three options – run for president, seek reelection in the Senate and retire from politics.
“I am thankful to the Vice President Leni Robredo for her trust in me,” Pacquiao said. “At kung sakali man na ako ay mag desisyon na tumakbo, sana ay masuportahan ninyo ang aking hangarin para sa kapayapaan at kaunlaran ng ating bansa. Gusto kong makita sa kulungan ang mga magnanakaw sa ating pamahalaan na siyang dahilan ng paghihirap ng ating mga kababayan.”
Robredo met with Pacquiao before he left for the United States to fight the Cuban welterweight champion. The two are likely to have another round of talks because “we agree that we want what’s best for the country.”
Robredo said he also had held talks with Senators Richard Gordon and Panfilo Lacson, as well as Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III. Lacson and Sotto are announcing on Wednesday their decision to run in next year’s elections.
